Labour hurt by Jones' trial

By ADVERTISER REPORTER - 02-04-1999

Government Minister Glenda Jackson believes Fiona Jones' conviction has seriously tarnished the reputation of the Labour Party in Newark.

Speaking to the Advertiser on Friday the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions said: "Serious damage has been done to Labour in Newark because of this case but I do not believe the damage is irreparable.

"We intend to fight the Newark seat with vigour but it is clearly going to be hard work.

"I believe it is very important that the people of Newark are represented. I feel this is best addressed by an early by-election.

"It is a very complex issue but we have no argument with the jury's finding. The Labour Party has for some time been seeking changes in the area of election expenses."

Glenda Jackson was at the Dukeries Complex, Ollerton, for the launch of a school travel plan for Nottinghamshire and to accept a 6,000-name petition calling for an extension to the Robin Hood Line to include stations at Ollerton, Edwinstowe and Warsop.
