Labour probe call

By JAMES KELLY - 16-04-1999

After the Court of Appeal's decision to uphold Fiona Jones' appeal against conviction for election fraud, the Conservative Party issued an immediate response.

Mr Richard Alexander, the prospective Parliamentary candidate for Newark, said he accepted the court's decision but would look forward to the next election .

"I've been chosen by the Newark and Retford Conservative Association to fight as their candidate, whenever an election is called," he said.

"My local party is totally united, in contrast to a Labour Party that is totally divided. Mr Blair must need a full inquiry into what went on and the electors of this constituency also need to know."

Conservative Party chairman Mr Michael Ancram echoed Mr Alexander's call for an inquiry.

"Naturally we accept the ruling of the Appeal Court in the Fiona Jones case. But the people of Newark will not accept the state of their local Labour Party, especially with the approach of the local elections in May.

"The Labour Party in Newark is riven with internal strife and divided into two feuding camps.

"It is little wonder that Tony Blair has decided to suspend it.

"The people of Newark want to know what is going on inside the local Labour Party. Mr Blair should conduct a full inquiry and publish the findings."
