Fiona Jones kept waiting

22-04-1999

The future of Newark's former MP Fiona Jones is to be decided by the High Court.

Speaker Betty Boothroyd told the House of Commons on Monday that the Attorney General, Mr John Morris, would seek an authoritative declaration from the High Court on the 1983 Representation of the People Act under which Mrs Jones had been charged.

"The court will be invited to make a declaration that, following the decision of the Court of Appeal to quash her conviction, Fiona Jones is entitled to resume her seat," said the Speaker.

Mrs Jones (42) of Church Road, Saxilby, and her election agent Mr Des Whicher (73) of George Street, Newark, were both convicted on March 19 of making a false declaration of election expenses. As a result Mrs Jones automatically lost her Newark seat.

They immediately launched an appeal that resulted last week in their convictions being quashed.
