A terrified man alone

By ADVERTISER REPORTER.

An interview with Tony Martin given to an Advertiser source offers valuable insight into the man himself.

What follows is a brief synopsis of his account given two weeks before the trial began.

"Look, I don't agree with shooting people. It's not something I take lightly.

On the night of the burglary I was a terrified man alone in the house," said Martin.

Talking about that night Martin said while in his bedroom he saw lights and heard noises coming from downstairs and became "very frightened, fearful, terrified."

Unable to stand it any longer and scared the burglars would come upstairs he walked out on to the landing and down the stairs.

When he reached the bottom he heard murmuring and a light shone in his eyes.

"All these things happened in a flash.

" I couldn't stand it any longer and then I just let the gun off.

"When you resort to using a gun you are desperate.

"I've never used that shotgun before.

"I didn't even know if it worked."

Asked about Barras's death Martin said: "I didn't know a boy had died and that I had taken a life until the police informed me on Saturday.

"I thought murder was something you planned and was something you did somewhere else, certainly not in your own home.

"The most worrying thing is that there are only losers in this case."
