Cockney musical chosen as show
Monday 19th March, 2012 - Palace Theatre, Newark
The toe-tapping musical, Me And My Girl, will be the next production staged by Newark Amateur Operatic Society. It will be presented at the Palace Theatre, Newark, from March 19 to 24.

The show follows in the footsteps of the highly successful Jesus Christ Superstar.

Me And My Girl is set in 1930s England and features a wealth of popular songs including The Lambeth Walk, Leaning On A Lampost, The Sun Has Got His Hat On and Me And My Girl.

It tells the story of Bill Snibson, a cockney from Lambeth, who finds himself to be the long lost heir to the Earldom of Hareford.

To gain his inheritance, he must learn to be a gentleman, and he must break his relationship with Sally, his cockney girlfriend. Ultimately he must change but Bill draws the line at losing Sally.

This delightful musical with its themes of acceptance, courage and love-conquers-all is expected to draw the audience in and bowl them over. The catchy showstopper, The Lambeth Walk, was the rallying cry of Londoners during the Blitz in the second world war.

Society chairman John Bendall said: “It is great for the society to be able to perform the very popular Me And My Girl, which is a fantastic show.

“It has an excellent and entertaining story and has some memorable songs, which are instantly recognisable and will give our audiences that feel-good factor.

“The show really will appeal to everyone and the society members are looking forward to starting rehearsals.

“We hope that the sun does have his hat on for what promises to be an entertaining and enjoyable night out.”

The society is always looking to expand its membership whether it is on the stage or behind the scenes.

Auditions will be held in October. More details about rehearsals and the auditions will be released at a later date.
