Falling out over a dog
Thursday 27th October, 2011 - Theatre Royal, Nottingham
Plenty of laugh out-loud moments
A group waiting in a kitchen for a much-loved family dog to die is hardly the best premise for a comedy, but that is exactly the plot of Basket Case.
The new comedy, written by Nick Fisher and starring Nigel Havers, Christine Kavanagh, Graham Seed, and David Cardy, is at Nottingham’s Theatre Royal until Saturday night (Oct 29).
The family dog in question is Toby, owned by divorced couple Miranda (Kavanagh) and Guy (Havers). When vet Martin (Seed) warns that Toby is unlikely to live much longer, Miranda phones Guy to let him say goodbye. When Guy, an obvious cad, turns up with his golfing pal James (Cardy) it soon becomes obvious that he has more on his mind than Toby, namely Miranda and rekindling their relationship. The analysis of the failure of the marriage and the dark humour surrounding the imminent demise of the dog brought plenty of laugh out-loud moments, particularly when Guy contemplates using a bag for life to put poor Toby out of his misery. Not the farce I was expecting, but funny nevertheless — SH.
