Jazz in the garden
Sunday 18th September, 2011 - London Road, Newark
Bob Wilson Jazz Band
music lovers helped to raise £2,000 for Beaumond House Community Hospice
There was a real party atmosphere when the Bob Wilson Jazz Band performed Jazz At Little Apples on Sunday afternoon (Sept 18)
Held at the home of John Oldham, of London Road, Newark, for the seventh time, music lovers helped to raise £2,000 for Beaumond House Community Hospice. Over the seven years the event, which sold out, has raised £13,250 for the hospice.
All held under a giant marquee, the new layout in John’s garden gave visitors more chance to get up and dance. The band, led by Bob Wilson on trombone, comprised Jim Wright on banjo and guitar, Dave Leithead on trumpet, Mel Thorpe on clarinet and saxophone, Paul Brown on drums and Steve Nutter on bbobass. You could tell they really enjoyed the music as they played Ice Cream, The Chimes Blues, and So Do I. Jim took centre stage to perform The Isle Of Capri while Bob sang Angry. In the interval we were treated to lunch provided by Zoe Appleyard and her team — Faith, Barbara, Sandra, Rae, Dawn, Eileen and Jacqui — comprising salmon, pork and feta cheese with a summer salad, followed by strawberry pavlova or a chocolate brownie with clotted cream. Drinks were provided by Ann et Vin, of Newark. The band then struck up again with Samantha, The Light From The Lighthouse, Old Folks and The Old Bazaar At Cairo — with two diners doing a quick rendition of the sand dance. You could hear a pin drop as Mel played Strangers On The Shore, followed by a rousing rendition of Midnight In Moscow. The afternoon ended with King Of The Swingers and When The Saints Go Marching In. I look forward to many more jazz afternoons — DAB.
