NITS At The Movies was a great success at the Magnus School, Newark. More than 40 children, aged six to 16, took part in creating their own scenes about going to the cinema.
Assisted by their drama leaders, Justine Lee, Rebecca Ladds, Oscar Morrey and Flick Spear, the children came up with some wonderfully imaginative work.
The youngest group, led by Justine, created a piece about various characters being sucked into a sat nav. TV reporters interviewed the cast and we saw snippets of the film starring Dame Judy Bench as a wicked witch and Johnny Dipp enjoying watching characters being transported through the magical sat nav. The next group, led by Flick, did a drama about a golden ticket which made black and white characters from a cinema screen come out into the real world. The film escapees then wanted to find colourful clothes but were very confused and wondered why they would need a teacake with Max (TK Max) and who Marks and his friend Spencer were. Oscar’s group featured a team of producers looking for new ideas for films. This included Titanic 2, Where’s Wally The Movie and Parrots Of The Curry Bean. In searching for great new film titles, the group were unaware that they were being filmed and decided that their search for a new film was a good enough idea to produce one. Rebecca’s group took the audience on a journey, showing many different genres of films from silent to action, and epic to romance. The larger-than-life characters were all confused as to what sort of film they were supposed to make so decided to link all the films together. The Newark-based Nearly Instant Theatre Team, led by Carolyn Drury, had a wonderful time working with the children and look forward to February half-term when Nits Explores London. Before then there is a Christmas special on December 23 — FS.
