Music to mark the best of British
Various Artists
NIGEL KENNEDY
Music is key at the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, this month with a mix of classical and rock. Pianist Alessandro Taverna begins proceedings on Sunday, January 15, at 11am with an upbeat recital.
The musician, who competed in the 2009 Leeds International Piano Competition, will perform Beethoven’s Sonata No 13, Chopin’s Fourth Scherzo, Liszt’s Tarantelle di Bravura and two pieces by Scriabin and Messiaen.
For more than 25 years, Nigel Kennedy has been classed as one of the world’s leading violin virtuosos. He is back to perform Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons on Monday, January 16, at 7.30pm. He will also play one of his new compositions called Four Elements — a descriptive work inspired by the elements of earth, water, air and fire. He will be accompanied by the Orchestra Of Life and The Nigel Kennedy Band. The former frontman of Ace, Squeeze and Mike And The Mechanics returns to Nottingham on Thursday, January 19, at 7.30pm as part of a new tour. Paul Carrack will sing a back catalogue of hits including How Long, Tempted and The Living Years as well as new material from his recent albums. Conductor Sir Mark Elder and The Hallé will be joined by Argentinian pianist Nelson Goerner for Ravel’s Piano Concerto For The Left Hand on Friday, January 20, at 7.30pm. The orchestra’s programme also includes En Saga by Sibelius and Beethoven’s Symphony No 6, called the Pastoral. The Nottingham Philharmonic Orchestra returns with its annual family concert on Saturday, January 28, at 7pm. This year the theme is Best Of British. The varied programme, which celebrates the year of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London 2012 Olympics, features the best music from stage and screen. The excerpts include Nimrod from Elgar’s Enigma Variations, songs from My Fair Lady, themes from the James Bond films and Doctor Who series, the 633 Squadron and The Dambusters and Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen.
