Musicians dazzle
After kind words were written about the Palace Theatre, Newark, and Newark Music Club by pianist Alessandro Taverna at the first concert last month, expectations were high for the second.
It featured the internationally-acclaimed guitarist, Craig Ogden, regarded by many as the natural successor to the great Julian Bream. The packed audience at the Palace on Saturday, October 29, was treated to a fascinating dance inspired programme, La Dansa.
Many French composers — Fauré, Debussy, Poulenc, Milhaud and Ravel — wrote music for the flute, giving flautist Judith Hall the chance to impress with her virtuoso and sensitive playing. Ogden’s guitar solos, Tarregas’ Recuerdos de la Alhambra and a jazz-inspired piece by Django Reinhardt, displayed his supreme artistry and fautless tone. The concert climaxed with Piazzolla’s History Of The Tango. The encore, played by the two Australias, was a fitting set of variations on Waltzing Matilda — TB.
