No-nonsense nagging from the other side
Thursday 17th March, 2011 - Collingham Memorial Hall
Married couple Albert and Connie Nobbs, played by Mark Lebeter and Sally Williams, and (left) Rebecca Smith plays Connie’s best friend, Rose.
The funny but poignant comedy, Albert Nobbs, by Gordon Steel, is the latest production to be staged by the Robin Hood Theatre Company.
Yorkshireman Albert has just retired but does not know what to do with himself. All he wants to do is read the paper and start playing football again.
His tight-fisted nature means he refuses to buy new furniture for the house, and he won’t go to New Zealand to see his daughter and granddaughter because he is afraid of flying. He makes numerous promises to his wife, Connie, but never gets round to doing them for her because she dies a month later in an accident. However, she returns from beyond the grave to sort Albert’s life out and set him up with her best friend, Rose. Along the way Albert has to deal with his batty, nosy, next-door neighbour, Alice. The cleverly-written play explores the themes of retirement, old age and death with many comical moments. It includes flashbacks to when Albert and Connie were younger, giving the audience an insight into how they met and their life together. The play contains plenty of music, mainly by Frank Sinatra. Albert is played by Mark Lebeter and Connie by Sally Williams. Rebecca Smith plays Rose and Yvonne Cockayne is Alice. Directed by Dawn Bond, it will be staged in Collingham Memorial Hall from Thursday, March 17, to Saturday, March 19, at 7.30pm. For the first time there will be a matinee on the Saturday at 2.30pm. Theatre director José King said: “After the success of Dawn’s debut direction for this company with Neil Simon’s The Prisoner Of Second Avenue in June, we look forward to her second production. “This play is simultaneously devastatingly painful and delightfully funny.” Tickets are available from José on 01636 706097, Newark Tourist Information Centre, Collingham Post Office, Southwell Library or at www.robinhoodtheatre.co.uk
