Operatic arias
Tuesday 24th May, 2011 - Theatre Royal, Nottingham
Opera North returns to the Theatre Royal, Nottingham, next week with three productions by Bizet, Beethoven and Janacek in its spring season.

The first sees performances of Carmen on Tuesday, May 24 and Friday, May 27, at 7pm. The Bizet classic opera will be sung in French with English subtitles.

Taking the lead role is American mezzo soprano Sandra Piques Eddy, who makes her British debut with the company.

The second is Beethoven’s Fidelio on Wednesday, May 25, and Saturday, May 28, at 7.30pm. It will be sung in German with English subtitles.

The opera based on devotion, defiance and disguise, is performed by the company for the first time. Soprano Emma Bell sings the lead role as Leonore. She will be joined by American tenor Steven Harrison as Florestan, Jeremy White as Rocco and Fflur Wyn (pictured) as Marzelline.

Leonore disguises herself as a prison guard to rescue Florestan, her wrongly imprisoned husband.

The third opera is Janacek’s From The House Of The Dead, which will be performed in English on Thursday, May 26, at 7.30pm. Based on Dostoyevsky’s novel set in a Siberian prison camp, it is written for a cast of predominantly male voices, performed by Jeffrey Lloyd-Roberts, Alan Oke, Robert Hayward and Roderick Williams.
