Teacher takes up baton for society
Monday 19th March, 2012 - Palace Theatre, Newark
Me And My Girl
ANDREW RAINE
A new musical director has been appointed for Newark Amateur Operatic Society’s forthcoming show of Me And My Girl.
He is Andrew Raine, who appeared with the company earlier this year as Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar.
He regularly appears with his wife, Julia, in productions by the County Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (Lincolnshire). Julia played Mary in Jesus Christ Superstar. Andrew, 30, of Witham St Hughs, is a peripatetic music teacher in Lincolnshire and specialises in woodwind instruments, in particular the bassoon and oboe. He is employed by the Lincolnshire Music Service. He recently directed Boston Youth Pop Choir involving 50-60 singers, has sung with Nottingham Harmonic Society, and performed in the Albert Hall, Nottingham, as part of the National Festival of Music for Youth. He has played in theatre orchestras for several shows, including Oliver, Guys And Dolls, West Side Story and The Yeomen Of The Guard. Me And My Girl will be staged at the Palace Theatre, Newark, from March 19 to 24. Andrew said he was looking forward to welcoming everyone interested in becoming a member, whether on stage or behind the scenes. Rehearsals take place at Holy Trinity School, Newark, on Thursday evenings from 7.30pm. Andrew said: “I am really looking forward to the challenge of being musical director. “The show chosen is a real rags-to-riches story and has some really popular songs including The Sun Has Got His Hat On, Leaning On A Lamp Post and The Lambeth Walk. “Anyone who is interested in taking part should come along and get to know the cast. We really are a friendly bunch.”
