When Harry Met Sally
When Harry Met Sally
The classic scene in the popular romantic comedy film When Harry Met Sally is when the lead lady fakes an orgasm in a restaurant to prove a point to her male companion about women and sex.
So it was great to see that scene played out so well by Sarah Jayne Dunn in the stage version, which opened at Nottingham’s Theatre Royal on Monday under the direction of Michael Gyngell.
The sketch earned her a well-deserved round of applause from a packed audience. The tale is set in New York and revolves around two main characters — womanising lawyer Harry, played by former Coronation Street heart-throb Rupert Hill, and the more romantically-inclined journalist, Sally, played by ex-Hollyoaks star Sarah Jayne Dunn. The pair are both excellent in the roles and make a great team. The audience is taken through their separate love lives and tribulations and to the obvious happy ending. There are some great comic moments along the way as dislike turns into friendship and finally into romance. The cast is a small one with just four other actors, Luke Rutherford, Kosha Engler, Callum McArdle and Annabelle Brown, who feature in the couple’s lives as friends and partners. Designer Tim McQuillen-Wright has come up with a simple yet very effective set that takes the pair through their 13 years of friendship and finally to the special night on the eve of the new millennium. It is a lovely play, perhaps not especially memorable, but it was a real delight to be able to sit back, have a chuckle and enjoy. It continues until May 1 — LAM.
