Blood checks out of town
7:03am Fri Apr 02, 2010

The future of certain types of surgery performed at Newark Hospital has been called into question after the withdrawal of a vital blood-checking service.
A senior doctor told the Advertiser the removal of blood transfusion testing to King’s Mill Hospital, Sutton-in-Ashfield, could limit the complexity of surgery at Newark.

He said it could lead to Newark Hospital becoming a centre for minor operations at the expense of more complex surgery, such as knee and hip replacements.

Patients with possible complications, such as a risk of bleeding, are already transferred from Newark to King’s Mill for surgery as Newark has no intensive care facilities.

But the doctor, who did not want to be named, said the removal of the blood-checking service would call into question what remaining cases could be dealt with at Newark.

He said it was another example of how health bosses seemed to be slowly but surely moving services out of town.

Patients’ safety and quality of care are the reasons given for the decision by Sherwood Forest Hospitals Trust, which runs both Newark and King’s Mill hospitals.

The trust says the move will reduce the risk of laboratory errors, with automated rather than manual testing, which is available at King’s Mill but not Newark.

Investigation of a recent laboratory “near miss” incident at Newark prompted the move to be brought forward from May as previously planned.

The doctor said the reason there was a safer clinical environment at King’s Mill was because services were being withdrawn from Newark.

He claimed the main reason for removing the blood-checking service was to save money.

The change, which staff at both hospitals were told about last week, means requests for patients’ blood samples to be cross-matched will no longer be processed at Newark.

The cross-matching ensures transfusions match a patient’s blood group.

Before major surgery a blood sample is taken and held in the hospital laboratory.

If a request for blood is made, for example due to unexpected bleeding during an operation, blood cross-matched with the patient’s sample can be supplied.

The doctor said the process, which took about 20 minutes at Newark, would be delayed while the sample was checked at King’s Mill instead.

A Sherwood Forest Hospitals Trust spokesman said: “This project was started well over a year ago in line with the Department of Health’s pathology modernisation programme and has been progressed to meet national NHS quality guidelines.

“It is an essential move in the interests of patient safety, based on the latest evidence of best practice in the field of blood transfusion, which promotes the use of automated rather than manual techniques.

“Some specialist testing has never been undertaken at Newark.

“For a number of years the out-of-hours blood transfusion testing for the trust has been provided from the King’s Mill site.

“Some of the routine testing was transferred to King’s Mill last year.

“The remaining testing transferred in March and is being undertaken on high-tech equipment at King’s Mill to give all of our patients on both sites the advantage of the very best diagnostic services.

“The trust has planned the transfer of services very carefully to ensure that the change will not impact on surgery undertaken at Newark Hospital and will be ensuring adequate supplies of blood continue to be stored at the hospital, which can be used for any patient in an emergency.

“This has nothing to do with cost-cutting.

“The trust recently detected an incident from which no harm resulted to any patient.

“This was dealt with in a timely manner by completing the planned transfer of testing to enhance patient safety.

“Near-miss events afford early detection of possible system weaknesses and provide an early chance at correction, which is why we have decided to bring forward this planned transfer of service.”

More deceit by the SFHT ? Do they have no interest in the people of Newark beacause they are all Labour supporters ?

Imagine the janitor at your local school becoming headmaster that's how you rise through the ranks ! the level of ability of the SFHT senior hierarchy is pitifull !

Lies and more lies oh yeah I hear rumours a development near the Hospital that would have brought 60 jobs to the area was lost due to the SFHT interfering !

This organization is a joke and a corrosive influence on Newark !!

They destroy the Hospital and now jobs in Newark !

Do they have no shame ???

We have had a doctor criticise the out-of-hours GP service at Newark Hospital. After experiencing it himself he said that it was reminiscent of a system that people had to endure to receive medical help nearly 100 years ago.

The doctor was concerned that the out-of-hours service was not very efficient. He was repeatedly questioned about his condition by staff that did not have the training of a GP and had a 90 minutes delay before treatment. We now have a senior doctor with the opinion that health bosses seemed to be gradually moving services out of Newark to save money.

It seems to me that King's Mill is like Dracula feeding off Newark services. The question therefore is will we allow those bosses to slowly suck the life out of our hospital and healthcare services or will we unite for the good of the Newark people and demand proper and proficient emergency and hospital services in Newark?

I agree there is a perception of subtle deceit but I strongly doubt they are all labour supporters indeed our hope of proper representation rest with Dr Ian Campbell MBE Labour parliamentary candidate for Newark.

I’m afraid the Sherwood Forest Hospitals Trust is no joke and King's Mill hospital is much too far to go for our desperately ill in need of urgent stabilisation. I agree that in the past they have had what you call a corrosive influence on Newark hospital but think they have not yet fully made of it a cottage hospital.

However, should Patrick Mercer win the forthcoming election a cottage hospital and all that goes with it seems to me to be only a matter of time, because I think, in Patrick Mercer the SFHT have a very amenable friend. Apparently 18,000 more people will come to live in Newark which is all the more reason why we ought to have a fully functioning hospital and ambulance service in Newark. The greatest shame is that Patrick Mercer never really seemed to be on our side and I think one could not muster his interest without the sound of cannon fire and a loud cry of give then a volley and charge.

Patrick Mercer, wrongly criticised the campaign to protect the future of Newark Hospital calling it irresponsible and designed deliberately to frighten, which is reminiscent, to me of his own farfetched
fear-provoking rhetoric about the Pakistan Afghanistan nuclear weapons myth. Propaganda devised because too many of us now believe that our soldiers are dying in vain.

The public meetings arranged by Mercer in which his constituents represent their own healthcare concerns was I think the real electioneering. It's not about party politics it is about our future hospital services as a whole and not accepting the short end of the stick or assurances without guarantees apparently something that Mr Mercer failed to grasp. We do not want a minor injuries unit we want a 24/7 emergency stabilisation unit at Newark Hospital and a reliable emergency ambulance service so let Mr Mercer nail his colours to that requirement or move on to a different vocation.

Taxpayers’ money is too precious to waste on any MP that would seemingly hold a different agenda to that of his/her constituents. I would like to say shape up or ship out to our MP, unfortunately, I very much doubt he could ever conform to our perspective or would desire to do so.

As for MR Mercer I`m sorry to say that I don't agree with the above posters. From what I understand Mr Mercer has behind the scenes been trying to put as much pressure on the trusts as possible to keep the funding of Newark Hospital safe .

Its the SFHT and PCT and there £350 plug sockets and rumoured mass financial incompetence that has resulted in Newark being chosen as the place for cuts !!!!!

Liverpoolnewark. Get real Mr mercer has nailed his colours to the mast too late to have any effect. He should have jumped up and down at the beginning instead of unjusttified comments at the people who were really concerned about the people of Newark. He has come on board too late to have any effect. It is up to the people of newark to make their voices heard

When it is left to a few indivduals who can see what is happening does not bode well for the future of newark. Get off you A**** and join the campaign

Mercer arranged for a public meeting 10 June, however, the PCT say that meeting cannot influence the decision because the consultation has finished. Clearly our MP did not trouble to do his homework or he thinks us fools.

Mercer’s meeting with the director of communications revealed that Newark does have a deficit of ambulances and he was given assurances that the deficit would be addressed, however, NHS Nottinghamshire County said ambulance provision work was ongoing but there was, nothing concrete, to say on it. That amounts to an assurance to Mr Mercer of little value.

The MP was given another assurance that any savings as a result of the healthcare review would be reinvested and that such savings will be spent on patients from Newark who go outside the area to be treated. Investment outside being King’s Mill hospital. Mr Mercer said the PCT had agreed to publish a full analysis of the public consultation and that it was not previously on the table, however, the PCT says a report on the consultation would have been in the public domain anyway. Once again it would seem our MP did not bother to do his homework. We don’t want flaky uncertain assurances we need cast-iron guarantees our lives and wellbeing are dependent upon our hospital and our ambulance services and with disappointment and regret upon Patrick Mercer MP.

as i have said all along the pct are just slowly but surely taking services away from newark hospital and transfering them to kingsmill with the eventual closure of newark hospital all newark will be left with soon is a gloryfied nhs drop in center the pct have hoodwinked the public into thinking the consultations they heald actually meant something but in reality the descision to close newark hospital by stealth was taken ages ago and the consultation should have been renamed public relations meeting, i think the hospital will be closed within 3 years by then the pct executives will have moved on with their fat cat salaries and pensions

Pravda and Fight trust me I am doing my best , I am retired but have a lot of connections locally and over the last few months have fed all information that has come my way to the relevant parties.

However the PCT and SFHT made their minds up this time last year , it is political in that the two quangos don't want to spend money on a non labour area.

The facts are these

The PCT and SFHT won't guarantee that Newark Hospital will receive the same level of funding as is currently provided.

They won't guarantee that wards won't close.

They won't give a guarantee about the average time it takes to get to Kings Mill from Newark in an emergency situation.

They won't explain the management and provision of ambulance cover .

How long before someone else whose life could have been saved is lost due to the hideous cold hearted SFHT and PCT ???

I wonder how much this whole review process has cost ??

My guess more than the money they are trying to save !

Typical socialist incompetence and waste , jobsworths and clowns extraordinaire decide the future of our health care !

Liverpoolnewark, I am sure you are doing your best but it is hard to believe our troubles are due to unwillingness to spend money on a none-labour area it sounds somewhat farcical to me. It seems more likely that they want to divert funds away from Newark for the betterment of Kings Mill hospital.

I believe you to be correct in they decline to make any concrete assurances furthermore I believe it is the job of our MP to fight tooth and nail to get concrete assurances or wholly side with his constituents. I understand they refused to answer the question how many of our people have died in an ambulance on the way to Kings Mill hospital.

Derek Ingamells said "If I’d had to wait 30 minutes for an ambulance I might not have made it" He was taken to Newark A & E and was treated quickly for heart attack, it saved his life. Trevor Frecknall said "If I’d had to go direct to Nottingham the only way I would have come home is in a box." It's a fight that must be won if our young and old are to have proper respect and healthcare.

The question to ask is what is the survival rate for someone having a heart attack who lives in Mansfield and for someone in Newark ?

I guarantee there is a massive difference.

It's a disgrace and the PCT and SFHT know it !
