The bus service between Newark and Nottingham is to be taken over by Marshalls of Sutton-on-Trent.
The number 90 service is currently run by Nottingham City Transport.

Marshalls will operate it from September 22.

The commercial manager for Nottingham City Transport, Mr David Astill, said they had found the service cost too much to run, despite several initiatives to increase passenger numbers.

He said they had been running the service from a depot in Nottingham and would often make journeys early in the morning and late at night without any passengers.

He said: “Significant increases in our operating costs, such as fuel, have not helped the financial performance of the route, which is weighted in terms of passenger demand at each end, with little demand in between.”

The managing director of Marshalls, Mr John Marshall, has more than 40 years’ experience of travelling the Newark to Nottingham bus route.

He said: “I gained a lot of experience with this bus route when I worked for W. Gash and Sons who used to run the Newark to Nottingham service from Bowbridge Road.”

Marshalls has taken on three more single-deck buses and will be recruiting four new drivers.

The fare will remain at £6 for an adult return.

The services running from Newark to Nottingham — Monday to Friday, 6.45am, 6.55am, 7.25am, 9.05am, 9.35am and 10.05am, and then every hour until 7.05pm, with a final bus at 9.05pm — will continue.

Buses will run from Nottingham to Newark at 8am, 8.30am and 9.05am, and then every hour until 4.05pm, after which buses will leave at 4.45pm, 5.25pm, 6.05pm, 8.05pm and 10.05pm.

However, some of the services are expected to end.

From Mondays to Fridays the 5.50am and 6.20am services from Nottingham to Newark will finish, as will the 11.05pm service from Newark to Trent Bridge, which will also be cancelled on Saturdays.

The 7am and 7.45am Saturday services from Nottingham to Newark will also end.

There will be a new service on Sundays at 7.45pm from Nottingham to Newark.

Mr Marshall intends to run extra bus services on Mondays to Fridays at 10.35am from Nottingham to Newark and 3.35pm from Newark to Nottingham.

Mr Marshall said: “The few amendments to the timetable should hopefully not cause too much inconvenience.”

Marshalls have bought the rights to keep the name of the service, The Fosse Way Flyer.
