A tourist information centre has been named as a finalist for a regional award.
Ollerton Tourist Information Centre is in the running for the top tourist information service in the East Midlands Tourism Enjoy England Excellence Awards 2010.

Based at Sherwood Heath, just off Ollerton roundabout, the centre is run by Newark and Sherwood District Council and opened in 1987.

It serves 51,500 customers a year in person, on the telephone, and via post.

As well as providing free information on local attractions, accommodation and places to eat, the centre offers a range of tourist brochures for other areas of the country, sells a range of locally- inspired souvenirs, event tickets and products.

It can also book accommodation anywhere in Britain.

Mr Roger Blaney, the district council’s cabinet member for sustainable development and regeneration, said: “It’s testament to the hard work of the staff that they have been named as one of the top three tourist information services in the region.

“Anyone who has used their services will know they are consummate professionals with in depth knowledge of local and regional tourism. What they don’t know about Newark and Sherwood isn’t worth knowing.

“Tourist information centres are often seen as a resource just for visitors. While this is true, I am sure local people would be surprised at the wealth of information they would find in the centre if they paid a visit.”

The winner will be announced at a ceremony on October 7 at the Roundhouse, Derby.
