Hands off hospital

Campaigners are calling on people to show how much they care about the future of Newark Hospital by forming a 250-strong human chain outside the site.
The demonstration, at noon on Monday, is being organised by the Save Newark Hospital group to give people a chance to object to proposals for the hospital.

The campaign secretary, Mr Paul Baggaley, said it would send a strong message to health bosses who are proposing to reclassify Newark’s A & E as a minor injuries unit.

“You talk to anybody and they say they don’t like what is happening. They don’t want to lose the hospital or the A & E,” he said. “But people don’t feel that they can do anything about it.

“This is a very easy way, by giving up a very short amount of time, to show that they care.”

The campaign plans to form a human chain on pavements around the site boundaries on Boundary Road and Bowbridge Road.

They will not go onto the site itself and will not block hospital entrances.

As soon as the chain has been formed a whistle will be blown to disband it and people will disperse.

“The aim is to cause the least amount of disruption as possible,” said Mr Baggaley.

He said the demonstration was not political, despite the campaign being chaired by the Labour Parliamentary candidate for Newark, Dr Ian Campbell.

Mr Baggaley said the Conservative candidate, Mr Patrick Mercer, and the Liberal Democrat candidate, Mrs Pauline Jenkins, were welcome to attend and had been invited to join the campaign.

“This isn’t a political thing for me and it isn’t for other people. My personal feeling is I don’t really care about people’s political careers,” said Mr Baggaley.

The group was informing both the hospital and the police about the demonstration.

People are being advised to arrive at the main hospital gate on time and on foot to avoid adding to traffic problems.

Patrick Mercer, would have us believe that of all our concerns Newark Hospital, he said, was much lower on the public’s agenda.

However above that article on page 23 of the Advertiser in bold text the headline is, Hospital hot topic as ballot looms. After all the Advertiser front page headlines, Stark Choice On Health, and, So Near, Yet So Far, and, Fight To Protect Hospital etc., and not forgetting the 8,894 signatures of people concerned about the future of our hospital Patrick Mercer is apparently not taking our concerns seriously.

Our hospital treatment our very lives and wellbeing would seem to be of a much lower interest to him than he that champions
the Save Newark Hospital Campaign, Dr Ian Campbell.

Unbelievably Mr Mercer has performed a complete U-turn and has agreed to attend the protest on Monday. Whilst we at the Save Newark Hospital Campaign welcome his attendance we can't help worrying that he is doing it for the purposes of electioneering. Should he be re-elected on May 6th the acid test will be whether he still wishes to be associated with us on May 7th!

I understand in Southwell Mercer stated that for him the country comes first and constituents came second and that he thinks our concerns about our hospital, was he said, much lower on the public’s agenda.

In retrospect, I think his attendance can only be deemed to be insincere and yet another publicity stunt.

With photographer Patrick Mercer attended the session of the National Blood Service at St Joseph’s Church Hall Retford to donate blood, which he must have known, he could not give having given blood days beforehand. Regardless of the fact he could not give blood, he asked to be photographed for the local newspaper, the staff agreed unaware of the previous story in Newark.

Mr Mercer said "I did give blood at Newark and had every intention of giving blood in Retford. I went through all the checks but, shortly after the photo was taken, I was informed that I could not give blood as I was within the time limit" Donors should wait 12 and 16 weeks between visits.

Regardless of character and conduct or perceived betrayal of our best interests I believe the Tory people will endeavour to reinstate a man that put the country and seemingly his own agenda before the town and his constituents and then they will indeed have the MP that they so richly deserve.

I could never vote for he that would threaten his own with legal action, intimidate or browbeat someone into keeping silent, or so we are informed.

I Believe Newark A&E, has NOT sufficient help From all the candidates regarding the future of Newark Hospital. I know only one candidate putting his heart and Soul to save Newark Hospital a 2nd candidate thinks it's “much lower on the public’s agenda” than other issues. Let’s show how wrong he is. Let stand up and be counted regarding Newark Hospital future.

I will try to turn up on Monday too! Isnt it a good job we have Dr Campbell helping us? He at least is trying to do something to save Newark Hospital. As it isnt about party politics I wonder if Mr Mercer will show solidarity with the campaigners and turn up and join the chain too. Or is that a daft question?

Kings Mill £250 million ! and still counting !

If they cut five or six senior staff at the PCT and SFHT they could keep A@E open with the money ! Say 1/1000th of the budget of Kings Mill ?

You couldn't make it up !

Thanks to everyone who turned up today to help make the Human Chain Around Newark Hospital a huge success. It is a shame that Mr Mercer refused to join the chain but instead chose to engage in electioneering. Thanks to Pauline Jenkins and Dr Ian Campbell for joining the chain and not using the event for political gain.

Well done , hopefully some great media exposure ?

What next ? Don't forget those directly in charge
at Newark Hospital are against the health review it's the leaders of the PCT and Sfht who need to
be targeted.

Great effort ! Now is the time though to confront the Notts County NHS trust and the PCT and SFHT on budgets and expenditure. As I said on the other page get rid of a few senior people on those trusts who are all making £80,000 and over and you could easily fund Newark's A@E. Remember folks over £250,000,000 has been spent on Kings Mill and according to rumours they wouldn't spend £40,000 a year on sorting the car-parking and space issue at Newark Hospital. Sorry I didn't make it down but have a hip operation in a month and was not in good shape. Old Bones creaking ! Good Luck
