Jobs hope for town
7:30am Fri Feb 26, 2010

More than 150 jobs could be created at ten new businesses on a multi-million pound Newark development.
Developers hope that a family restaurant such as Frankie and Benny’s will open at Malt Park on the former British Diamalt site, next to Northgate Retail Park.

Mr Steve Hampson, a partner in Harlaxton Estates Partnership, Long Bennington Business Park, wants to attract restaurants similar to those at Giltbrook Retail Park, Nottingham.

A veterinary practice has already agreed to move into a former office/reception building and a planning application is due to be submitted for change of use of an existing warehouse to a children’s indoor activity company.

“I am a Newark person born and bred who has the town’s interests firmly at heart to develop economic prosperity, create jobs and attract new visitors,” he said.

“It is not our aim to suck business from existing locations in the town, but to add ten new businesses to the town, which in turn will attract greater numbers of visitors.

“We don’t want people to drive to one place and then drive away.”

Mr Hampson said they were emphasising the importance of Newark and the vibrancy of the town in trying to attract large chains to the site.

"Enough is ENOUGH."

No in the public interest, with another proposal of  Restaurant with driving  facility location at Maltkiln Lane Newark will be bad news.

The former British Diamalt maltings complex, business proposed in the Newark-On-Trent bridge ward.
Object to the above proposal for the following reasons.

North Gate Retail Park has already become a residential area with Barrett development. Traffic is starting to get out of hand any additional Drive through Fast Food Outlets will only add to more problems.

There area already experience problems with commercial vehicles coming on the site at all hours parking on double yellow lines and stay over night on the pavement.

Drivers are already racing on North Gate - Lincoln Road at all hours.

Many residents already experiencing problems on and around the a residential area on Kings Sconce Avenue, Newark and around Riverside Walk. This is due to vehicles mostly coming in after visiting KFC and Macdonalds, depositing litter and causing noise nuisance late in the evenings. Locals also have rights to live in peace from all the extra noisy from people and motorists.

The Retail outlets were there before the Barrett Development so perhaps it is that that should have been denied planning permission.

Lincoln Road was a boy racer hot spot long before Woolies arrived in town too.

Stop trying to stunt Newark's growth and allow Newark to become a place worth visiting.

please NO NO NO!!!, to this site,if mr hampson dont want to suck business from the town why build 10 outlets out of the town? and in his own words dont want people to drive to one place then drive away!!so you just want to people to drive to your outlets, and not bother with the already run down town? the plans shown in the advertiser forget to show the already built houses on the area, the tipit yard and the hoval factory, where is all the traffic going to go with another 10 outlets? dont you think it is bad enough already this is a residential area,we dont want more cars lorrys and noise here,

When Aldi wanted to enlarge their store by a small area so that the store was less cramped, the Head of Planning at the time (Mike Evans) turned it down under delegated powers as it would affect the vitality of the Town Centre. Aldi appealed quite rightly and won their appeal. Now this developement would as I see it come under the same criteria of affecting the vitality of the Town Centre. For that reason alone and in spite of what Brian says It should be turned down. The town centre is already in the early stages of becoming a ghost town

This development is purely speculative and may take years to complete. I don't believe there are companies queueing to move in.

Meanwhile the development is being submitted for each individual phase one part at a time, therefore avoiding financial contributions to improve the decrepit road and footpath or any other wider contributions to the area.

The final element for which they have yet to apply for any permission are two large retail units (sheds)which will bring substantial traffic to Maltkiln Lane and again raise questions of the effect on the town centre.

I feel sorry for the residents at Kings Sconce Ave who are on a never ending building site and now have a large illegal wood recycling opperation nextdoor by the river- where has the news coverage of this been??

the comments about newark being on its way to becoming a ghost town are not true, it already is a ghost town, years of bad planning descisions, council ineptitude and vested self interest have left newark the way it is, let them have their development at least it may bring some much needed employment to the town or do some of the previous comments smack of NIMBY ism's PEOPLE NEED TO GET A LIFE AND EMBRACE PROGRESS NOT TRY AND HOLD IT BACK

they can put this development in my back yard anytime they want to its creating jobs for local people the reason newark town center is a ghost town is the landlords of the town center propertys/shops are continually putting up the rents/lease cost therefore forcing a lot of businesses to closen or relocate i know this through personal experience and on top of that newark council hammer businesses with ever increasing business rates

ps and another reason newark town center is a ghost town is the continuing stalling of the asda developement by the council with all the vested interest that comes with it plus people prefering to shop out of town to get cheaper petrol unlike newark with its monopoly cartel and what do the council do VETO ANY THOUGHTS OF AN ASDA PETROL STATION (I WONDER WHY?) whiff of self interest perhaps

Julian, you must calm down and not make statements that are not proven. I do not live in Newark but look at it from an outsiders point of view. It is a well known fact that the many small shops in newark town centre wil find it hard to compete as you state the rents and rates are too high. Having a petrol station at Asda does not necessarily mean that the petrol will be cheaper. The idea that 150 jobs will be created is a public relations exercise. What usaually happens is that the developer obtains planning permission then sells it on for a profit. All he forks out is the fee for planning permission. Then he sits back and lets some one else take over. That the way it works and will always be that way.

I agree with Laurence Goff our town roads are already traffic full like a city therefore best find another location so peoples lives will not be terribly plighted in the manner Laurence forewarns.

I also agree with Laurence Goff and PravdaJack, we have had deaths on the Lincoln Road Bridge over the years. And with more traffic it would make it worse, we are all ready wanting a reduced speed limit with the traffic that we already have.

Racer crackdown a campaign group needs need to be setup to highlight the needs for speed restrictions and more policing on North Gate- Lincoln Road, Newark. When is these madness going to stop. Let's have CCTV at all times and catch these racers and taken them off the road for good. Not a laughing matter anymore, I applaud all the messages so far. Bridge ward in Newark are getting fed up with their noisy and illegally racing around. These dangerous drivers and anti-social behaviour need to stop before someone is killed. We the people and supporters of safer roads for us all I must highlight this issue in the public interest.

Expect a resubmission-the application was not turned down on the basis of it being a takeaway/restaurant-just on problems with its design- the applicant will take advice and redesign the proposal.

A new submission will not help on this very small bending road with a likelihood of increase traffic from vehicles and people in these very tight squeeze
indeed. When is these badness going to stop in the public interest.

As a resident of Kings Sconce Avenue i can fully understand peoples concerns.Firstly if you dont live in Newark or at this end of the town then it really wont matter to you what they decide to build and should not effect you in any real way. For the families that live to the rear of the propossed developement there are a few issues of concern. Ok, there has been an improvement with the removal and modernisation of the old Hoval Units and i think the propossed Veternary Surgery would be a good idea. Also i dont see a proplem for a childs activity center either. I think these developements would be good for Newark and the families moving into the new Barratts development. HOWEVER, there is a huge problem at the minute with HGVs passing down Maltkin Lane to the Wood recycling plant which at present does not have aggreed planning permission. This is a concern and is really a health issue and has safety issues. The road is not suitable for such vehicles and huge HGVs passing next to houses and more importantly a propossed CHILDRENS Activity Center, Come on surely not. In general though, with proper worthwhile retail units being built, i have no problem, would just like to be given more info on things. ByDave

Many of the concerns over this proposed develpoment could be resolved over time without halting progress on what can only be good for Newark as a place for people to visit. This towns future depends on attracting visitors and the negative postings of the likes of Laurence Goff can only harm the future prospects of our fantastic town. Residents close to the site should quite rightly be concerned but issues like boy racers on Northgate are unrelated and will be dealt with by the police. Don't take the blinkered view of Laurence Goff, think long term about the rejuvenation of these run down areas.

what about construction jobs. How many local contractors are involved in Asda project? How many will be involved in this one should it go ahead? Not everyone works in the service industry!

Staythorpe power station employed foreign and out of town workers on all but the lowest paid jobs. Are these projects going to be the same?

You only have to look at Newarks festive arrangements to see that the town is dying a slow death. I don't think the residents of the area in question have anything to worry about, no right minded company would want to invest in Newark.

the reason why newark shops are empty is because of unrealistic rent asked for by greedy landlords... get real its newark not london.. there are small businesses that would be tenants employing local people if rents were reduced
