A police dog handler whose two Alsatians died when he left them trapped in his car during a heatwave has pleaded not guilty.
Pc Mark Johnson (39) faces a charge of causing unnecessary suffering to the animals.
He appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court today. (Monday)
Pc Johnson spoke only to give his name, age and to enter his plea.
He is alleged to have left the dogs, Jet (10) and 18-month-old Jay-Jay, unattended in his car outside Nottingham Police Headquarters at Sherwood Lodge on June 30, one of the hottest days of the year.
The RSPCA is bringing the prosecution, accusing Pc Johnson of unnecessarily confining the dogs in an environment that was detrimental to their well-being.
A pre-trial review will be held on December 17, which Pc Johnson was told he does not have to attend.
The four-day trial is due to take place at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on February 22.
