Animal owners are being invited to the annual animal blessing service at Southwell Minster this afternoon.
The service has been held for the past 12 years and is organised around the feast day of St Francis.
The cathedral’s Canon Precentor, the Rev Jacqui Jones, said the service was an opportunity to give thanks for companion animals and creatures in the wild.
She said: “Everyone is welcome, however many legs or paws. Last year two ponies joined the celebration.
“The origins of the service reflect on the crucial part animals have made to life for us and also in the history of the minster when dogs accompanied travellers as they defended them from all that might cause them harm in the forest, which surrounded Nottinghamshire in earlier centuries.”
