Gary Cole and Patricia Davidson, of Fernwood, have been friends for 30 years, but got together only in November.

Gary once went out with Patricia’s sister and she was previously married to his best friend.

Gary, 50, said: “We were friends for 30 years but hadn’t seen each other in ten.

“The last I heard she had moved to Blackpool to run a hotel.

“We got talking through Facebook and I realised she had moved to Blidworth to stay with her daughter.

“I said I’d go over for a drink and a catch-up and it blossomed from there.

“Trish used to be married to my best friend.”

Gary also married and the couples holidayed and socialised together over the years. Both divorced and lost track of each other.

“There was never anything there until recently,” Gary said.

“It staggers us both as to why it’s happened now. We can’t understand it but we’re very happy.

“It’s been a whirlwind romance but we want to commit our futures to one another. Neither of us wants to do this again at our time of life and both want this to be for keeps.

“The best bit about it is that we know each other so well. It seems like we have always known each other.”

Gary said his his best friend was happy for him.

“Valentine’s Day is the perfect day to get married as it is the most romantic day of the year,” said Gary.

Twelve couples have chosen February 14 for weddings, civil ceremonies or renewals of vows in Nottinghamshire this year — more than twice as many as on Valentine’s Day 2012 and 2011.
