More than 300 women and girls and even a dog or two, female of course, took part in the first sponsored Sunflower Run For Fun at Newark Showground yesterday.

Heather Robb, 43, of Rutland Avenue, Newark, is undergoing treatment for breast cancer and is being supported by the hospice. She was at the event with a group of friends who had all made sunflower costumes. They were Dawn Hyams, Sue Cross, Imogen Sellers, and her daughters Freya, 10, Sian, 6, and Amelia, 4. (140710JT8-158)
The women-only event was organised by Beaumond House Community Hospice with the help of Newark Showground after Cancer Relief UK decided not to hold a Race For Life this year even though three previous ones at the showground had been very well supported. It said it wanted to concentrate on events in larger towns.
The fundraising and marketing manager for the hospice, Mr Wil Chung, said he was delighted with the support.
He said they had pledges of more than £10,000 and hoped that figure would be even higher once all the money had been collected.
An hour before the event was due to start there was a sudden heavy downpour but by the time the run began at 7pm conditions were much better.
Mr Chung said he was pleased that the rain did not appear to put people off. He has already started to plan next year’s event, which will be held on June 22.
