Taxi rank decision delayed

A decision on whether to move a taxi rank in Ollerton has been deferred by Newark and Sherwood District Council while more information is sought about the scheme.
Taxi drivers in Ollerton asked for the rank on Sherwood Drive to be moved over concerns its current location was unsafe because it forced passengers to get out into a busy road.

The district council’s general purposes committee considered plans to move the rank further up Sherwood Drive and position it on the opposite side of the road.

Nottinghamshire County Council would charge the district council between £2,000 and £3,000 to implement the new traffic regulation order to create the rank.

A member of the committee, Mrs Linda Shilling, thought the area proposed for the new rank might be being used as parking bays for the disabled.

Mrs Christine Rose said now the council was aware of the problem it was obliged to act.

She said: “If we have been told it’s a safety issue it’s uncomfortable for us not to proceed. If we have been told it is dangerous for people getting out of cars and then there is an accident, it doesn’t leave us in a very good position.

“I wonder whether Ollerton and Boughton Town Council would take on some of the cost?”

Mrs Sylvia Michael did not understand why moving the taxi rank to the other side of the road would make a difference.

She said: “There will be no difference to two people getting out of the back of a car.”

Mrs Irene Brown wanted clarification from the county council about why the cost of altering the position of the taxi rank was so high.

The committee agreed to defer a decision until its next meeting so more information could be provided.
