Tornado damages home
2:48pm Sat May 01, 2010

The roof of a pensioner's bungalow was badly damaged on Friday evening by a mini tornado.
Mrs Maggie Johnstone, 88, of Bowbridge Road, Newark, was sitting with a friend in her front room at 6.30 when the tornado struck her home.

She said: "There was a terrific crack-like noise like you used to hear during the war."

Ridge tiles were blown off and tiles were torn from two large areas of the roof. Mrs Johnstone said she was waiting to hear what would needed to be done to repair it.

The wall at the entrance of Newark Storage Company Ltd on Bowbridge Road was also ripped down by the tornado.

The company's CCTV footage shows rubbish swirling around and bins being knocked over shortly before the wall came down.

It then travels through the yard and takes off part of the roof of a building leased by Hy-ten Building Steel.

The managing director of Newark Storage, Mr Ed Rose, said: "I'd left for the day but some people were still working here. It happened in a space of a few seconds. It went through the gate and down the yard. People were working in the building and it just went through ripping off parts of the roof.

"The night shift had just started. Nobody was hurt and there was no other damage."

He said his company's insurance should cover the damage and they were in the process of making a claim.
