The consultation over the future of Newark’s Palace Theatre was completed with approximately 350 people responding to Newark and Sherwood District Council’s questionairre (Five Day Plan For Theatre Opening, Advertiser, January 5).

But have the suggestions made by members of the public been given enough thought?

A more positive view of ideas would surely be of more benefit.

A point not clarified is the £1,000 a day subsidy it seems is necessary to run the theatre.

Every effort must be made to keep the Palace — Newark’s jewel in the crown — open to as many users as possible.

Newark Town Council has reduced charges for the Town Hall facilities to encourage more use.

Rather than increasing hire charges, could this not be the way forward for the Palace Theatre?
