Cyclists urged to see and be seen
9:36am Wed Jan 11, 2012
It seems the police are considering going into schools to educate children about riding a cycle without lights when it is dark.
Remember one of the old slogans: “See and Be Seen”?
I certainly do and it has stuck with me over the years, so why not bring it back?
It worked then so should have the same impact now.
It not only covers lights but dress also. Far too many people are riding cycles dressed in dark clothing without lights.
Many a time I have had to break or swerve to avoid a cyclist riding in the dark without lights and wearing dark clothing.
On one occasion I drove from Castlegate to Hawtonville and counted 11 cyclists without lights, and none of them were children.
It’s about time the police stopped and tackled these law-breaking, dangerous road users.
If it was a motorist driving without lights or being a danger to the public they would soon be on our tails and report us.
So, our policemen should do the deed and book them, not turn a blind eye to what’s going on as they have in the past.
Also keep an eye on cyclists at all traffic lights because many blatantly ignore the law at every traffic light junction I have ever used.
