Money well spent

I WAS serving abroad with the RAF in 1948. Pay at that time was rather meagre for most Servicemen.
One pay day I noticed a stoppage of two shillings (10p). There were general complaints about this in camp.
It was explained by an officer this was for a health service in the UK started by the Health Minister, Aneurin Bevan, and we all had to contribute.
Recently I had a small operation on my hand at Newark Hospital.
A plastic surgeon came from the QMC, Nottingham, to carry out the operation. There were three nurses assisting who all did an excellent job.
What would this have cost in the USA?
And there I was in 1948 complaining about having to pay two shillings out of my pay at the start of the NHS.
We must all fight any further cutbacks to the superb hospital and staff at Newark.
