AMONG the many successful companies in Newark over the years, one stands out for its prominent and enduring role. Whether in the guise of Ransome and Marles, RHP, or NSK, the ball bearing manufacturer has been at the heart of Newark life for more than a century.

Replace cross
3:24pm Thu Jan 26, 2012

It is my view, after all the arguments for and against demolishing the Robin Hood cottages in Newark, that it is time to see some sense and remove them.

It would give much better visibility for traffic entering Lombard Street, which is dull in itself.

A good course of action may be to open the area, lay grass and flower beds and replace the cottages with what should have been the planners’ first consideration, Beaumond Cross.

There may, however, be no one in the Newark and Sherwood District Council planning department indigenous to Newark to know, or care, what should be there.

When all is said and done there is more local history in the cross than some old cottages.

When all the arguments are over between organisations that have no real interest in what they will leave behind, the area at the top of Lombard Street will always be known as Beaumond Cross, not Robin Hood Cross.

Let us locals have our cross back where it belongs.

— ERIC KIRTON, Marsh Lane, Farndon.
