Championship celebrations for Smith on gin-clear river

A gin-clear river combined with a gale-force wind didn’t help the 74 competitors in the Tacklebox Newark and Anglia Baits Dyke and Trent Championship on Saturday.
Winner from peg five at East Stoke was Lincoln’s Dean Smith who fished a groundbait feeder with worm and caster to take nine skimmers, one barbel and a 3-6-0 perch for a total of 25-10-0 for the main prize in excess of £200.
In second on peg 17 at Rolleston was his fellow Lincoln angler John Turner who used the same method to land bream for 21-2-0, while Clive Fletcher was third on peg seven on Crow Trees with 19-15-0.
Pole and hemp superstar Tony Marshall could only manage a section win on this occasion with 10-10-0 from the Weir Field.
The midweek open on the river saw 28 fishing and a massive winning weight. Newark’s Toby Bunting drew peg three on the Weir Field. He started the match with a few roach and perch, but noticed a bream roll three-quarters of the way across.
He quickly set up a feeder rod and fished with groundbait and casters to take 25 bream for 93-1-0.
