Members of the Bujinkan Brian Dojo, Newark, run by Mr Kiyth Fotitt received awards for reaching the next Kyu and awards were presented to the senior and junior of the year.

Mr Barry Holland, 45, of Elizabeth Road, Newark, was named senior of the year award and also received his 8th Kyu.

Mr Holland, who has been learning ninjitsu for a year, said: “I like ninjitsu because of the family atmosphere and we have all bonded well.

“Other than this, I don’t do any sport so I come down here twice a week to train and I can put everything into it.”

Darcey Dunne, 13, of Beckingham, was awarded the junior or hattori of the year award and also achieved her 7th Kyu.

Darcey said: “I have been doing this since I was eight. I do it to keep fit and because it’s not just always doing the same thing we do different things.

“We train with wooden weapons and learn different fighting techniques.

“I joined with my brother and I used to do gymnastics. We saw a poster for it and he thought we should come, although he doesn’t any more.”

Mr Fotitt said ninjitsu was proving popular and the Dojo now had more than 30 members.

He said ninjitsu was more than just a sport because as well as teaching combat it also gave members the opportunity to learn survival skills, first aid and other skills.
