Newark Hockey Club ladies’ 1st XI opened up a four-point lead over third-placed Derby Asterdale in Midlands League Feeder East with a comfortable 4-1 win at home to Matlock Baileans 2nd XI.
Coach Paul Halfpenny described himself as “very satisfied” after the performance, with some outstanding defensive and forward play rewarded with goals from Jemma Gough, Nicola Jenner, Emma Wilson and Megan Beard.

Halfpenny said after the match: “It was a tough game, but the commitment, resolve and patience of the team has to be credited.

“We were under severe pressure for most of the first half but managed to come through with a lead at half-time.

“I thought the whole team were superb, but special mentions go to Abigail Gordon and Holly Powell who were outstanding in defence."
