Newark Hockey Club ladies’ 1st XI had the perfect opportunity to open a four-point lead over nearest rivals Boots, who were not in action — and they did it in style with a 7-0 win over Redhill in the Notts Premier League.
It took just 30 seconds for the league leaders to open their account, a neat exchange of passes on the right flank from Becky Taylor and Emma Wilson releasing Hannah Coe who rounded the visitors’ defence and coolly slotted the ball home.

Just as Redhill started to threaten, Newark hit them with another goal, turning over possession from a Redhill penalty corner to force one of their own.

From the resulting set piece, it was the understudy injector, Nicola Jenner, who positioned herself perfectly at the far post to finish a well-drilled routine and open her account for the season.

Debutant goalkeeper Sophie Chambers pulled off several high-quality reaction saves to protect Newark’s lead to the half-time break.

Newark’s second half performance was of the highest quality with player-of-the-match Holly Powell in masterful form.

Emma Wilson provided Newark’s third goal on 41 minutes after skilful approach play by captain Sarah Pask.

Coe’s second goal came on 45 minutes. Again, her pace was too much to handle as she rounded the visitors’ defence and deftly slipped the ball through the advancing keeper’s legs.

Youngster Emma Sanders was next on the score sheet. She finished a great team move on 48 minutes, then completed her deserved brace on 60 minutes.

It was the in-form Coe who rounded off a terrific game for Newark, when on 65 minutes she completed her hat-trick and an impressive personal tally of seven goals in two games.

Newark men’s 1st XI could not continue their good form, going down 3-2 at Coalville in East Midlands One.

Halfway through the first half Coalville converted a penalty corner to take the lead.

Newark responded quickly and some good work on the break from Nick Crouch, Adam Reynolds and Jules Williams saw Williams convert a short-range effort from an acute angle.

The sides went in level at half-time with both teams showing signs of more goals to come.

The hosts were the quicker to find their stride in the second period and two penalty corners in relatively quick succession saw two more goals to put Coalville in a commanding position.

After this wake-up call Newark started to step it up and a pin-point long range pass from John Reynolds found Nigel Bett in space, who linked up with Williams for him to bag his second of the game.

Despite Newark pushing for an equaliser, Coalville managed to hang on to their slender lead.

The men’s 2nd XI played Loughborough in a friendly match and, despite their opponents being a league above them, held their own for much of the game.

The 4-0 score line in Loughborough’s favour masked a good performance by Newark, who put together some well worked passing moves and got a few shots at the keeper.

They will be hoping to perform at the same level when their league campaign resumes this weekend.

Newark men’s 3rd XI drew 3-3 away to Leicester Westleigh 3rd XI in East Midlands Two.

Both teams remain in mid-table after the stalemate.

Newark ladies’ 2nd XI lost 3-1 away to Nottingham University 3rd XI, while the ladies’ 3rd XI had better fortune with a 1-0 home win against Dukeries 2nd XI.
