Following in father's footsteps

Winning a junior golfing title runs in the blood of the Bentley family after a youngster repeated the feat of his father to have his name etched on the Newark Golf Club Junior Cup.

Charlie Bentley, 15, of Normanton-on-Trent, won the annual trophy to emulate the achievements of his father Chris, who won the title in 1977.

The Junior Cup is open to players under 18.

Charlie’s achievements are made all the more impressive by the fact the Tuxford School pupil only took up the sport two years ago.

The family connection does not stop there as it was Charlie’s grandfather, David Winterton, who guided and tutored the youngster into the game.

Following his 1977 win, Charlie’s father went on to enjoy a successful career, writing himself into the history books of Newark Golf Club by winning almost every trophy on offer at the club.

Charlie said he was delighted to pick up the trophy, but was not content with matching his father’s achievements and wants to go one better.

“My dad only won it once and I want to make sure I win it two or three times,” he said

“It was a great feeling to pick up the trophy but my only aim now is to make sure I can have as good a career as my dad in the game, or even better.

“He won everything there is to win here and that is my aim.

“My game, especially my drive, is very like Rory McIllroy, that who I really respect on the tour at the moment. To turn professional is the dream.”

Charlie said he couldn’t wait to defend his crown next year.

“Next year I will aim for victory again. I have three shots at it,” he said

“But I did play my dad a few weeks ago and somehow he managed to beat me, despite not playing for two years, and I am not going to lie, I was devastated.”
