Newark Men’s 1st XI 4 Ashbourne 2
Newark Men’s Hockey Club 1st XI captain Ben Brown prepares for a shot on goal against Ashbourne on Saturday.
After a draw in their opening game of the season the men’s 1st XI were involved in a goal fest at the Magnus Sports Centre, recording a 4-2 win over Ashbourne.

Newark took the lead when Nick Crouch cut in from the right wing to square a ball to Nigel Bett, who calmly slotted into the bottom corner.

The visitors sounded a warning when they hit a post, but it wasn’t long before the equaliser came with a deflection wrong-footing the keeper.

Ian Sellers restored the advantage, getting on the end of a snapshot from captain Ben Brown, and soon the lead was extended as Steve Littlewood made it 3-1.

With 15 minutes to go Ashborne got themselves back in the game to make for a tense finish.

But the home side regrouped and after a break from Sam Taylor, Robin Lowth crashed the ball home to seal the win.

Next up is a trip to Berkswell and Balsall Common on Saturday.
