Notfast still going strong

Notfast Running Club, now rapidly approaching its 25th year, are inviting new members to join their friendly set-up.
The new year has brought new faces to the committee with new ideas for 2010. One of the plans is to increase membership and promote a sociable club that also offers something for the more serious veteran competitor.

“We give people the opportunity to improve their health and fitness by running with us, and we also enter races and enjoy numerous events,” said the club’s new social secretary, Diane Thorpe.

“People always smile when they see our Notfast [Newark Over Thirty-Fives And Still Trying] vests as they expect us to be exactly that — not fast. However, we have some very competitive and speedy runners in the club who prove that’s not the case.”

To join Notfast you must be over 35 but there is no upper age limit. George Combes is the oldest running member and, at 75, he’s completed 88 half-marathons.

“While I’m fit and able, can remain injury free and still have my health, I’m determined to reach 100 half-marathons before I hang up my shoes,” said Combes, who didn’t start running until he reached his 60s.

Notfast meet at Woods Court (off London Road) every Tuesday at 7pm and at Flowserve (off Hawton Lane) each Thursday at 7pm. The club caters for all abilities, from the complete novice to those who are more experienced runners.

“There’s no pressure or expectations, apart that you have fun and enjoy yourself,” said Thorpe. “Potential members are invited to give us a try before they join.”

Membership for 2010 is £22 and that includes affiliation to the major athletics organisations. More information is available from club chairman Stuart Ashley on 01400 281580.
