Notts Cup – 1st round Newark 36 Paviors 19
Newark producing one of their best performances of the season so far in over powering Paviors in a Notts Cup first-round tie at Kelham Road on Wednesday evening.

A good crowd on a cold night were rewarded by some excellent rugby - including a memorable score from centre Alex Moore just before half-time.

The try – made from a counter attack and a quick passing exchange between Aloesi Waqalevu and Moore – topped off a first half performance which brought Newark a 17-0 lead.

No.8 James Price forced his way over for Newark’s first try following an opening penalty from fly-half Matt Cox who also converted the touchdown.

Newark almost grabbed a further try through captain Chris Tate who pounced on a Paviors mistake only to be penalised for a double movement in trying to scramble his way to the line.

However, Newark finished the half in command when Moore finished off in the left corner for a try which Cox converted.

Tate made up for his first-half miss by setting up Newark’s third try five minutes into the second half, wing Sam Sibilski finishing off after the Cove brothers, Matt and Lewis, had played a part in keeping the move alive.

That score put Newark 22-0 ahead, but Paviors gave home supporters a few nervous moments over the final 25 minutes.

A try by prop Darren Gray and another from Moore kept the home team in a healthy lead despite the visitors grabbing three tries of their own.

Next stop for Newark’s first team is a league date at Leicester Forest on Saturday, kick off 2.15pm.

Team: Tate; Edlin, Buddha, Moore, Sibilski; Cox, Sizer; Gray, M Cove, J Barnsdale, Evans, Tatham, Webster, L Cove, Price. Subs: Jackson, Tomlinson, C Coen, Bridges.

Tries: Price, Moore (2), Sibilski, Gray. Cons: Cox (4). Pen: Cox. Sin bin: Moore, Cox.
