Some of the year’s biggest stars from the Newark area will feature in this year’s Nottinghamshire Sports Awards.
The event, hosted by Sport Nottinghamshire, celebrates a wide-range of sporting success, from elite athletes to local clubs and community volunteers.

Richard Whitehead, of Lowdham, is one of the front runners in the disabled sportsperson of the year category.

He started 2016 by winning gold in both the 100m and 200m at the IPC European Championships in Grosetto, Italy.

Whitehead also defended his 200m Paralympic title and added a silver in the 100m, storming back in the closing stages to move from seventh to second.

There are two local representatives in the junior disabled sportsperson of the year category.

Jacob Hage, a member of the 4A’s Canoe Club in Newark, and Meg McFarlane, a Special Olympics figure skater from Ompton, are both nominated for the accolade.

Newark Rugby Girls under-15s were nominated for junior team of the year after an excellent season on and off the pitch.

They went through an inspirational season that saw them crowned under-15 girls national champions.

Their coach, Mark Dobb, has been nominated for community coach of the year after he was instrumental in developing the team and taught some players who had never played rugby before.

Tuxford Academy received a nomination in the sporting secondary school of the year category.

The event will be held at the Nottingham Conference Centre on February 1.
