Long Eaton 6 Southwell 18
Southwell stayed top of Midlands 4 East (North) after a narrow victory over a Long Eaton side, previously unbeaten at home, recording their ninth consecutive league victory on Saturday.
The home side applied waves of early pressure but a solid defence kept Long Eaton at bay.
Excellent discipline from the Southwell forwards in the first period restricted the hosts to just two kickable penalties - taking them in at half-time 6-0 to the good.
Into the second period and full-back Will Ullyott cranked up the pressure on the home side with a series of strong runs peppering the home defence.
As Long Eaton found it difficult to get out of their half, Southwell's pressure eventually paid off as the ball was worked wide for winger Paul Mayfield to cross in the corner.
With the visiting pack dominant Paul Rich knocked over a penalty to send Southwell into the lead and soon after it was Ullyott who broke through the midfield to seal the 18-6 win.
Next week sees the Redmen take on unbeaten Tupton in a top of the table clash at Park Lane.
