Town aim for six of the best

Newark Town boss Tony Joynes believes the club could make history by winning an unprecedented six trophies this season.
After Saturday’s 5-1 win over AFC Hucknall in the League Cup, the Blues are still in the hunt for four trophies, with games in the Notts Senior Cup and Midweek Cup punctuating their charge towards the summit of the Central Midlands Football League South Division.
In addition, Newark Town Reserves are still in with a shout of winning the Reserve Premier Division and another cup competition this season.
While promotion to the sixth tier of English football remains Joynes’ dream, he considers success on all fronts as achievable.
He said: “There is no reason why the first team cannot continue to fight for trophies on all four fronts.
“I was present on the day this club won the League Cup under Rupert Thomas and seeing the look on those lads’ faces, that is something I want to bring back to this group.
“We are not out to beat that achievement but I know we have it in us to go one better and win a couple of trophies.
“As I’ve said before, promotion is what is really driving us forward, but it is nice to have the distraction of regular cup games.”
The Blues returned to winning ways in the league over the festive period thanks to a 1-0 victory over rivals Southwell City at Station Road.
Joynes highlighted the influence of his backroom staff in helping pick the players up for that fixture following their first defeat since October.
“The work that Adrian Speed, my assistant, and Bob Shaw have done since I came back to this club has been commendable,” said Joynes.
“Behind the scenes they have been working on making us a tighter defensive unit, which I think came to the fore in the game at Southwell and again against Hucknall.
“The players know from now on in every match they play is going to be a cup final.
“They have worked very hard to put themselves on a pedestal and everyone will be trying to shoot them off it.
“We have proven we are one of the best in the division, but we need to continue that form towards the business end of the campaign.”
Town, currently fourth in the table, are back in league action on Saturday, travelling to Nottingham United.
