An interest in collecting Moorcroft and Beswick pottery led Mrs Shirley Wallington and her husband, Simon, into making their living from antiques.
The couple have just opened Albert Street Antiques Centre in Newark, converting the former Salvation Army citadel into more than 20 units and 30 cabinets let to a mix of dealers.
Shirley says: “We have collected seriously for about ten years. The house became so full that we decided to start selling some pieces.
“We attended fairs and built up contacts and things followed on from that.”
The centre has attracted traders from as far afield as Southampton and Norfolk and the antiques, collectables and lighting displayed spans more than 200 years.
Although the centre opened only this month, its has already been visited by antiques hunters from abroad.
Shirley says: “Newark is a well-known centre for antiques.
“Parties travel around calling at all the antiques shops and centres in the town. It does bring people into the area.”
Shirley also recommends antiques as an investment.
“Now is the time to buy. Antiques are cheaper in the recession but they will go up in value.”
The Albert Street centre is open seven days a week.
