The winner of Miss Newark and District 2008 is
Miss Leanne Skrzypkowski (19).
Miss Skrzypkowski, a sales negotiator at an
estate agency in Mansfield Woodhouse, won the title at Southwell Racecourse
on Monday.
She was one of 13 finalists judged by a panel and by Advertiser readers, who
voted by text message to make up a quarter of the points.
Miss Skrzypkowski will compete in the Miss England competition at Champneys
Springs, Leicestershire, on June 16 and 17.
She was entered into the competition by her uncle, Mr Terrence Doak, of
Cornwall, and did not know about it until a few weeks ago.
Miss Skrzypkowski, of Kirkby-in-Ashfield, enjoys singing, dancing and
snowboarding. She has done modelling and would love to become a professional
model.
Her parents, Mr and Mrs Rob Skrzypkowski, her brother, Ryan Skrzypkowski,
and her boyfriend, Mr Daniel Bacon, attended the event.
There are no restrictions on where entrants must live, but judges were able
to use their discretion in choosing finalists.
The area was widened because the event is jointly promoted by Southwell
Racecourse and the Advertiser.
The judges were: the Advertiser’s marketing director, Mrs Rachel Brown, the
general manager of the racecourse, Mr Nathan Corden, Nottinghamshire county
cricketer Paul Franks, and the reigning Miss England, Georgia Horsley.
Miss Julia Stanley, of Stanley’s Model Management, Derby, was the commere.
The runner-up was Miss Jodie-Maria Storey (18) of Bullpit Road, Balderton.
Miss Storey is a business studies student at Newark College and works part
time at the Wimpy.
She said: “I didn’t think I had the confidence to do it but now I think I
can do anything, and I definitely want to go into modelling.”
Third was Miss Elizabeth Washington (19) of Balderton, who is studying
musicial theatre at Melton Mowbray College.
Finalists were interviewed in the afternoon and were questioned again, in
front of about 900 people, during an evening of races.
The winner’s prizes included: a hair consultation and facial by Saks Beauty;
a day at Eden Hall Day Spa; a professional portfolio by Graham Would
Photography; teeth whitening by The Teeth Whitening Centre; a Bubbles
Bathtime gift hamper; a silver clock from Cope Jewellers.
