November 26, 1902On Saturday at noon a goodly number of spectators assembled at the Trent Navigation Company's Dockyard, Newark, to witness the launch of a new vessel. The ceremony of 'christening' was performed by Miss Milthorp, daughter of one of the directors. The vessel is 72ft 6in long, and will carry 90 tons. She will trade between the Humber ports (Hull, Goole and Grimsby) and Newark, Nottingham and Leicester. The plans were prepared by Mr Raynor, and the work carried out under the supervision of Mr Wilson, foreman at the dockyard. o-o-o-O-o-o-o A grand evening concert, in the sacred cause of charity, attracted a numerous audience to the Corn Exchange on Monday evening last. The late Mr W. Taylor, for the benefit of whose widow and family the concert was organised, was a young tradesman in the town, who gave, during his short life, his best services to various charitable efforts, and who was most prominently identified with the Newark Football Club as its treasurer. His premature and sudden decease was keenly felt by followers of local sports, and that sympathy took practical shape in the form of an effort on behalf of the widow and young family left to face the world alone. o-o-o-O-o-o-o The annual sale of work in aid of the funds of St Leonard's Church, Newark, was opened in the Town Hall last Thursday by Lady Maud Rolleston. The stalls were arranged in the orthodox fashion, but were artistically laid out with many tempting articles, decorative or consumable. November 19, 1902The prize distribution and concert in connection with the Magnus Grammar School, Newark, took place in the Town Hall, the chair being occupied by the ex-Mayor (Alderman Pratt), who is chairman of the governors. The headmaster, the Rev E. Spencer Noakes, said that in the past year they had instituted the Magnus Rifle Corps. He believed that it was during the Boer War that our soldiers had to learn how to take cover, and all their operations at the school were under conditions of taking cover, because of the narrow limits of the playground. o-o-o-O-o-o-o The business hitherto carried out at Long Bennington under the name of the Newark Dairy, has now been taken over by the Newark Dairy Limited, as a co-operative association of farmers and others in the parish. Sundry meetings of the committee of management have been held and we are informed there is every prospect of the future success of the enterprise, judging by the applications for shares which have been received by the secretary and the weekly increasing output of the now well-known products of the dairy. o-o-o-O-o-o-o An exhibition of science and art work and needlework by students from Newark School of Science and Art, highly creditable alike to the excellent headmaster, the school, and the students has been inspected by many interested visitors. The sketching club exhibit was one of the most interesting, consisting mostly of local views. The first prize, first section, was obtained by Miss E. J. Nicholson, and the second prize by Miss V. Baldry. November 12, 1902The Mayor (Alderman Pratt) the president of Newark Swimming Association, occupied the chair at the meeting at the Town Hall when the association's prizes and trophies were awarded. He said there was some talk in the town of the desirability of building a covered swimming bath and if that came about they would have no hindrance at all in learning to swim all year round. He knew that land was rather expensive and did not know how the money would be raised. But seeing the great benefit it would be to the youth of the town he thought a small rate would enable them to do a great deal. If, on the other hand, it was a matter to be taken up by private subscription, he should be very glad indeed, as one of the public, to come forward and give a substantial subscription towards buying the land and the erection of a proper building. o-o-o-O-o-o-o The committee of the Juvenile Foresters' Society held the annual dinner at the Saracen's Head Hotel, Southwell, when the proceedings assumed special interest through the fact that a presentation was to be made to Brother Joe Burgess, who has discharged the duties of treasurer of the society for a large number of years. The gift took the form of an enlarged photograph of himself, skilfully executed by Mr J. H. Burton, Pelham-street Studio, and the pendant of the order, which is only given on rare occasions. Dr Hallowes made the presentation and said, in the course of an appreciative speech, that Brother Burgess was initiated into the Juvenile Foresters Society 37 years ago. November 5,1902The blue book has been issued, giving the census returns for the county of Nottingham, and our readers will be interested to see the changes in population that have taken place during the last ten years. The table of births, marriages, and deaths shows that in Newark registration district the excess of births over deaths in the ten years was 2,815, while the loss from migration almost counterbalanced this, as it amounted to 2,532. Two males and two females claimed to be 100 years and upwards. The rural district had no centenarian, but a good proportion of veterans, four being over 90, while Southwell district had one over 95, and 16 over 90. There was an influential and largely-attended gathering of members of the Manchester Order of Oddfellows (Newark District) at the Town Hall last Thursday evening, when a banquet was given under the combined auspices of the Good Samaritan, Good Intent, and Noah's Ark Lodges. The Right Hon Earl Manvers presided, and the repast was served in excellent style by Hostess Lane, of the Robin Hood Hotel. |
