On Thursday morning William Barrett, 17 years of age, of St. Leonard's Court, Newark, was walking along the riverside near Nicholson's works when he warned some children playing there to be careful.

When Barrett had reached the bridge he heard screams, and perceived a child in the water.

He ran back and dived in without divesting himself of any clothing, and quickly rescued the little one named Lowe, about three years of age.

The child was taken home and later appeared to be little the worse for the adventure.

The annual procession of illuminated boats, under the auspices of the Newark Rowing Club, took place on Thursday night but was, unfortunately, marred by unpropitious weather.

Several smart showers fell, which not only had an effect on attendance, but also reduced the number of boats which were illuminated.

On Tuesday last, as Mr H. Farmer was turning a corner round at Byard's Leap his cycle skidded and threw him violently to the ground tearing off the cover from his front wheel, but otherwise uninjuring the machine. Fortunately, beyond a severe shaking, Mr Farmer escaped injury.

On Saturday last the usual Newark Football Club practice match took place on the Muskham Road ground, before a goodly number of spectators.

Teams were chosen from the first team and the reserves. The committee had decided that an admission fee of 1d and 2d be charged, and that the gate should be handed to the Newark Hospital. A cheque for £3 14s 10d has been forwarded.

The angling competition promoted by Mr George Chesher of the Black Swan Inn, St Mark's Lane, Newark, gradually increases in popularity year by year and this year 38 entrants were entitled to take part.

The lower water of the Bennington length of the Witham was chosen and minnows, as usual, were the most prominent catch.

When it is stated that no less than 227 fish were taken in all, weighing under 2lbs, some idea may be gathered of their size, and anglers must deplore the scarcity of the good fish taken here in years gone by.

The match was won by Mr W. Marsden.

At the Matlock Regatta a fortnight ago a Newark oarsman, G. D. Lidgett, competed in the single sculling race for a handsome silver cup valued at five guineas.

In the final Lidgett lodged a protest against Molesley, a Matlock oarsman, whom he alleged fouled him.

The officials ordered the race to be rowed again last Saturday. The course was a mile on the Derwent. Lidgett quickly asserted his superiority and won easily by four lengths.

For a trophy won outright, the cup now in Mr Lidgett's possession is an unusually good one and it is to be hoped it is but a precursor of many more to come to his prowess.

A question of the obstruction of a footpath in Easthorpe was considered by Southwell Town Council. Mr J. Leek said that females could not now use the footpath because of the obstruction.

Mr W. Vickers thought that the clerk should write to the person who had diverted and obstructed the footpath asking him to remove it, and if that was not done that the council should remove it for him.

The clerk of the Newark Board of Guardians (Mr A. J. Franks) has issued to members another edition of the Year Book for the Newark Union and Newark and Claypole District Councils.

There is an instructive table showing the full rateable value of each parish, also the rateable value after deductions under the Agricultural Rates Act 1896 and the amount that one penny in the pound will produce.

The rateable value of Newark is given as £74,420, and the produce of a penny rate £305 3s 1d.

The rateable value of balderton, which comes next, is given as £14,556 and the amount of a penny rate brings in £52 16s 11d.

The annual Band of Hope treat, in connection with the Newark Christ Church branch of the Church of England Temperance Society was held on Thursday.

The children were taken to Thorpe in conveyances kindly lent by Messrs G. W. Ford and Son, T. Parnham and Son, Mr W. E. Knight, Mr G. E. Dobney, and Mr Wm. Berry, whilst the helpers were conveyed in a char-a-banc by Mr Swann.

Everybody appeared to enjoy the ride, and on arrival at Thorpe the party was welcomed by the Rector, the Rev. A. W. Ping, who had arranged for a service in St Laurence's Church.

After the service a move was made to Mr. Machin's field, where cricket, football, and other games were indulged in until teatime.

On Monday morning last an inmate of the County Asylum at Radcliffe succeeded in affecting his escape and getting clear away from that institution.

His home is at Newark, where his wife and family are located, and it was expected he would make his way here. The patient had lately exhibited a docile spirit and was permitted a certain freedom.

It is not often that Bank Holiday is kept as a general holiday by the residents of Kneesall but August 1, 1904, was taken advantage of for a cricket match, married v. single, after which a public meat tea was provided Mr W. Germany, landlord of the Black Horse Inn, when considerably over 100 sat down.

A meeting was held to consider how best to spend the August Bank Holiday when it was decided to have a social gathering and invite the Rev G. R. and Mrs Chell and family, and make them a presentation.

Several ladies undertook to canvass the villages of Kneesall, Ompton and Kersall, for subscriptions which was heartily responded to and a beautiful clock was purchased with the money.

We understand that Mr Henry Gray, of Newark, has been appointed by Colonel Denison and the officers of the Sherwood Rangers to the post of bandmaster of that regiment.

Mr Gray has been a member of the band for some years, is a well known Newark musician, and is now fulfilling an engagement with the Imperial Band at Dover.

The Bishop of Southwell, the Rev George Ridding, has tendered his resignation of the Bishopric, which will take effect on November 2.

In a letter to the Diocese his Lordship says: "At Christmas I thought that I was so completely restored to health as to look forward to holding a final Synod this summer before parting.

"But the effort of preparing for it proved that I had miscalculated my strength; and after a chill caught in May, causing congestion of the lungs and laryngitis, the strain ended in complete nerve prostration, from which I am only partially recovered. The doctors concur with me in thinking that, at my age, it would be unreasonable to undertake another winter's campaign of Diocesan work."

As Captain Hanson, of Fulbeck, was ascending the hill from Newark Road into Leadenham, his pony became restive and, in his efforts to control it, Captain Hanson was thrown down.

The result was a few cuts and bruises and a severe shaking. The pony ran away, but was stopped near Leadenham Station.

The directors of the Collingham Gas Company are making a forward movement in the direction of encouraging the use of gas for household cookery and domestic purposes.

Like many other gas companies they find that consumption falls off in the summer to a very large extent, so that great inroads are made into the earning capacity of the works.

A great equaliser of consumption is found to be the extension of the system of the use of gas for domestic cooking, which also in hot weather commends itself to the housewife, not only on account of its cheapness and cleanliness, but also because it is so cool.
