About a week ago, John Abe was received in custody at Grimsby from Newark, and since that time he had refused to speak to anyone, or to answer when interrogated by the police.

On Friday he was brought before the Bench and charged with stealing a bicycle. He preserved his sullen, speechless demeanour in court, thereby puzzling the justices as much as he did the police.

"We'll remand him for a week," said the chairman of the magistrates. "He'll perhaps think better of it by next week - if he doesn't we may have to send him to Sessions."

The Chief Constable was dubious, however. "I don't know," he said.

"I promised him ham and eggs for tea yesterday if he'd speak, but though he nodded his head to intimate that he would like some, he never said a word."

About twenty minutes to noon on Sunday, just before the church and chapel congregations left their places of worship, a fire broke out in an outhouse at the rear of the premises in Bridge Street occupied by Mr Gale, printer and stationer.

The Fire Brigade were summoned, and Captain Harrison and his men hurried to the spot. When they arrived they found that a small building in which waste paper was stored was smouldering.

A connection was made with the main at the end of the street, and all danger was speedily averted.

Though it is only six weeks ago since it was first decided to form a Rifle Club at Southwell, so much energy has been thrown into the scheme that the committee found it possible to have the ceremony of opening the range on Thursday last.

This is situated on the site of the old Brick Works, Westgate, and has been prepared entirely by the voluntary efforts of the members.

An exceedingly smart arrest was made on Monday last by Pc Smith of the Borough Police Force.

The Constable was on duty in one of the streets of the town and noticed a stranger come out of a cycle dealer's shop.

His appearance was anything but compatible with that of a man who desired to hire a bicycle.

He was travel-stained and had apparently ridden great distance and this led the constable to make enquiries.

The dealer informed him that the man had asked for a bicycle, but as he did not know him he had refused to let him hire one.

Pc. Smith afterwards visited a lodging-house in Water-lane where he saw the man. He also found a bicycle covered with dust, and he was informed it belonged to the suspect.

He asked him several times to explain how it came into his possession, but the man stubbornly refused to open his lips, and he was then arrested.

The many friends of the esteemed Bishop of Southwell, Dr Ridding, will learn with much regret that his lordship is at present confined to his room at Thurgarton Priory with a severe attack of laryngitis and is forbidden even the solace of ordinary conversation.

Keen interest was manifested in the marriage of Mr Ernest Albert Howcroft, second son of Mr and Mrs J. Howcroft, of Castlegate, Newark, and Miss Ida Edith Staniland, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs O. Staniland, of Bridge Street, Newark, which took place at the Parish Church on Thursday afternoon.

The approaches to the church were crowded with sightseers, while the sacred edifice itself was well filled with guests and friends of the families.

The bridegroom is well known in athletic circles, being a member of the Rowing, Cricket and Hockey Clubs, while the bride is universally esteemed by a wide circle of acquaintances.

She was attired in a gown of ivory crepe de chine, the skirt being gauged at intervals, forming a deep flounce at the bottom over silk sleeves and chemisette of tucked and drawn mousseline de soie. She had a tulle veil and a wreath of orange blossom.

At the Newark Rural District Council meeting a letter was read from Mr Godfrey Tallents, town clerk, which stated: "Terms have been agreed between Newark Corporation and the district council for the joint provision of a hospital for infectious cases.

"The corporation is now considering a scheme which will provide for smallpox in addition to other infectious diseases.

"The corporation has in view a suitable site which will provide for both hospitals, with the requisite distance between them and they wish to know whether the district will join with it, with the additional cost being divided between the two councils."

The annual meeting of the Newark Football Club was held at the Royal Oak Hotel on Monday.

The Hon Secretary, W. Anderson, submitted his annual report, in the course of which he said: "The past season has probably been the most successful in the history of the club, and never before has the team obtained such a high position.

"To have secured third place in the Midland League is undoubtedly a fine performance, especially seeing that the calibre of the clubs in the league is much stronger than formerly."
