A farm labourer employed at Mr Fox's farm, between Kirklington and Southwell, was returning home on Saturday, and while crossing the plant over the River Greet at Maythorn, he slipped and fell into the water.

It is a very awkward place, and a big drop. Upon being attended to it was found no bones were broken, but his parcel and clothes were carried down the river.

Messrs. Jas. Hole and Co, Ltd., the well-known Newark brewers, have just issued a striking and original poster, designed to further popularise their ale products.

The picture introduces the head and shoulders of a young man of flashing eye and sunny countenance, who is holding up to the light a glass of foaming golden ale

The unconquerable spirit of the English must, in a great measure, be engendered by our uncertain climate. We shrug our shoulders and present as smiling a face as we can to rain, the spoilsport.
This was the ordeal the people of St Leonard’s had to pass through yesterday, with as good grace as they could command.

Notwithstanding the weeping skies the promoters, with that fortitude that laughs at all reverses, decided to carry the programme through.

On Monday afternoon a magnificent motor-car was being driven from the direction of Lincoln to Newark and when near the GNR level crossing was running with free engines.
The gates were closed so as to allow a passenger and a goods train travelling in opposite dirrections to pass. The brakes of the car failed to act, with the result that it collided with the gate which was only closed and not locked and which sprang open.

The signalman in the box, seeing what had happened, with great presence of mind, put up the signals against the express, which at the time was coming over the tubular bridge.
If the gate had been locked it is probable that a more serious accident would have occurred.

The young ladies attending the Newark High School for Girls and Pupil Teacher Centre gave a delightful entertainment in the Town Hall on Satuday afternoon.
Alderman B. T. Pratt, as chairman of the managers, extended a hearty welcome to all present.
He said it was thought that the parents of the children should have an opportunity of seeing what their children were taught, and also hear and see the various exercises.

A perfect summer day enabled the children attending the church schools of Newark to enjoy their annual festival without any drawback.
Following an old custom the children from the various school assembled at the parish church, there to join in an united service of praise and thanksgiving as a proper prelude to a festival day.

The Secretary of the North and South Collingham Fire brigade wrote to Newark Rural District Council asking for permission to use water from the “dead ends” of the mains in North and South Collingham for hose practice.
The chairman said he had had the matter mentioned to him by Mr Curtis, on behalf of the Fire Brigade, and he had also talked it over with the two representatives of the parishes. They thought that the request was a reasonable one, and might be acceded to. It would benefit the mains to be occasionally used in this manner at the “dead ends,” and if the practice was attended by the councillor of the parish, he could be entrusted to see that no undue waste of water occurred.

The Newark and District Friendly Societies’ Hospital house-to-house collection took place on Saturday. The result of the collection amounted to £59 16s 11d, well in excess of last year.
There were 72 collectors engaged in the town on Saturday, and for once the weather considered the almanac and made the conditions somewhat favourable for a long tramp round the streets.

The Wesleyans in Tuxford and district have had very limited accommodation for their Sunday scholars, and for some time have been preparing for a suitable building to meet their requirements. A piece of land close to the chapel was acquired, and upon this a brick and stone building is being erected at a cost of ÂŁ500. The stone-laying ceremony took place on Wednesday afternoon.

After a lapse of a couple of centuries, Southwell has again become the seat of an episcopal residence, the Right Rev Dr Hoskyns taking up his home in the picturesque little cathedral city on Saturday.
It was at the Southwell Diocesan Conference of October, 1905 that Dr Hoskyns first announced his intention of building a bishop’s house at Southwell.

Since February, 1906 the new house has been in the course of construction, the builders being Messrs Fish and Sons of Nottingham. The cost is something like ÂŁ9,000.
