On Wednesday afternoon, about four o-clock, when Mr W. Johnson, carrier, Marston, was returning from Newark market, his horse shied on going down Appletongate, and backed the van into the churchyard railings, opposite the Vicarage. The impact broke four railings and considerably damaged the wall.

William Hilton, RA (1786-1839) has had five pictures in the National Gallery. The large painting of the Raising of Lazarus now hung on the North side of the Parish Church at Newark is by this artist.

Mr Cornelius Brown, in his new History Of Newark, refers to the artist and his father in the following extract: "Wm Hilton, RA, was a very eminent artist, and held the office of professor of drawing in the antique school at the Royal Academy.

"The large painting in Newark Parish Church was presented by Mr Hilton as an altar piece, and the following inscription was placed in the centre of the bottom part of the frame in 1838: 'To the church of St Mary Magdalene, Newark. This picture was presented by William Hilton, Esq, RA, in affectionate remembrance of the native town of his father, AD 1821. Mr Hilton died in 1839 in the 53rd year of his age.'"

The Mumby Shield was contested on Monday evening on the Sconce Hills when the opposing teams were Mount School and Wesleyan School, which resulted in a win by the former by three goals to nil. The Wesleyan boys played pluckily throughout, but were beaten by better combination. Joseph Kay at centre forward was the best boy on the Mount side scoring two goals and E. Crowder one.

A strange story of a bag of money being lost and found in the street by the same person after the lapse of about four hours between the two operations is reported.

It appears that a local farmer went to a shop in Lincoln Street, Newark, on Saturday at about 5.50pm.

He did not alight from his trap, but by some means a bag containing ten sovereigns fell to the ground. He did not become aware of his loss until about 9.45pm, when he immediately reported the matter to the police.

He was recommended to return to the place at which he stopped in Lincoln Street, and on arrival there he found his bag of gold on the roadway.

At a meeting of the Newark Education Authority it was reported that the attendance officer has made 1,145 visits to the houses of irregular children, and served 40 notices upon the parents.

The continued low percentage of attendance is due to the prevailing epidemics of chicken pox, diphtheria and mumps, more particularly in the infants’ schools. No less than 4,939 attendances have been lost during the month.

We have been favoured by Messrs T. Fisher Unwin, Adelphi Terrace, London, with a copy of an ordnance survey map of their well-known large sheet series which embraces Newark and district.

The production, which has been prepared with scrupulous care, is published at 2s, and is indispensable alike to the businessman, the cyclist and the pedestrian.
