Jane Kirkham is only five months old, but she will never escape death as narrowly as she did on Thursday afternoon. She was lying on her pram outside Mr Jack Baggaley's butcher's shop in Long Bennington when a lorry hit the pram, spun it round, tipped it on end and almost completely demolished the shop.

Inside the shop were Mr Baggaley and one customer — Jane's mother, Mrs I. M. S. Kirkham, of Great North Road, Long Bennington. Jane and her mother were both none the worse for their hair-raising experience.

One of Newark's three cinemas is to close. On April 26 The Ritz Cinema in Baldertongate is to give its last showing. The reason for the closure, Mr A. F. Swaine, southern area supervisor of Star Cinemas, the owners, told the Advertiser, is the effect of entertainment tax.

He said: "We reluctantly had to make the decision and the blame can only be attached to the heavy burden of entertainment tax. It has been responsible for the closing of many small cinemas of the same calibre as The Ritz."

The Post Office authorities are to conduct a check of sound and television wireless licences in the Newark postal area. When the last full scale comb was made in the Newark district there were 19 prosecutions and fines totalling £74 were imposed. More than 30 attended the first annual meeting of Newark Dog Training Club on Monday night — and so many were keen to train their dogs in obedience that it was decided to run two classes a week instead of the one originally envisaged.
