Some unusual finds have been made during the excavations for the new power station at Staythorpe.
Most interesting and perhaps most important of them is a leaf type flint instrument. This is thought to be a spear-head at the Upper Palaeolithic Age dating between 6 0 and 10 0 years BC.
It was found during excavations in a gravel deposit 12 feet below ground level some 300 yards from the River Trent and is regarded as the oldest flint instrument ever found in Nottinghamshire.
It is in an almost perfect state of preservation and it is something that would create interest in any natural history museum especially when it is remembered that it must have been made with another flint.

Ninety-three years ago - long before the days of nylons or the freezing of prices in shops - Messrs W.T. and S. Noddall of Stodman Street Newark were selling black cloth shooting coats for 16 shillings.
And nearby in the Market Place Messrs Sutton Taylor and Co. wholesale and retail drapers could supply an apron for 10 pence.
A number of old papers containing this information were discovered a couple of days ago in an ancient thatched cottage at Westborough when a grandfather clock was removed from the wall.
The papers which throw much light on the cost of living nearly a century ago are in surprisingly good condition.

Newark Athletic Club is to widen the scope of its activity still further by the formation of a ladies' section. This was announced by the club chairman (Mr F.N.C. Dwyer) at the annual meeting in the Town Hall on Thursday.
Mr Dwyer said: "If a ladies' section is not formed promising local runners will join neighbouring rival clubs. If we had entered a ladies' section in the county championships last year Newark would have come first not second because some of our best performances were from women."
It was decided that the ladies' section would be established at the first meeting of the season in March.

After making arrangements for suitable alterations to the memorial in the Minster Southwell Parish Council has given orders for work on the Recreation Ground to begin forthwith and before this appears in print the contractors should have started on the construction of three tennis courts and a bowling green.
These and the football pitch should be completed by April 1 and various local organisations have agreed to give valuable assistance with the lay-out and equipment of a children's play park.
It is also hoped that a pair of wrought-iron gates will be erected as a permanent outside memorial to the fallen of both wars.
