April 30, 1952Another contact with Newark's daughter town in the USA was made on Friday, when the Mayor of Newark, Coun J. A. Markwick, recorded a message to Newark, New Jersey, in the Mayor's Parlour. The recording will be taken back and broadcast by Miss Margaret Arlen, an American television star, who spent less than an hour in Newark. The Mayor was introduced to Miss Arlen on the recording by BBC commentator Wynford Vaughan Thomas. After an informal interview, in which Miss Arlen asked questions about Newark-on-Trent, its church and its castle, the Mayor sent a message to the Newarks of America. o-o-o-O-o-o-o Mr J. H. Clarke, borough surveyor and water engineer to Newark Town Council for 27 years, was presented with an inscribed silver salver at Monday's meeting of the council, as a token of appreciation for his long service. He retires in June. Making the presentation, the Mayor, Coun J. A. Markwick, said Mr Clarke had seen many improvements made in Newark, taking a big part in many of them himself. o-o-o-O-o-o-o Sherwood Foresters who died in action in two world wars were remembered on Sunday, when the 8th Battalion of The Sherwood Foresters had their annual St George's Day church parade. Before the service a laurel wreath with the inscription: "In memory of our Fallen comrades," was laid on the altar of St George's chapel in Newark Parish Church by Captain S. Cooper, president of the Newark branch of the Foresters' Old Comrades' Association. After the service Major General P. N. White, Colonel of the Regiment, presented two medals - one to an ex-Forester, Mr F. G. Walker, of Granby Avenue, Newark, and the other to the 8th Battalion's present Regimental Sergeant Major, G. Congreves April 23, 1952Cafferatas' ladies rifle team won the Newark smallbore championship last season. Mrs E. Walster received the cup on behalf of the team. She had the highest ladies average. The ladies' team comprises Mrs E. Walster, Miss D. M. Kiddle, Miss R. Johnson, Miss B. Myers, Miss V. Carrington and Miss E. Brown. The championship cup for Newark and District Smallbore Rifle league was presented by Dr E. Ringrose. o-o-o-O-o-o-o The financial position of St Catherine's House, Newark, is again causing anxiety says the annual report to be presented at the annual meeting next Wednesday. There is a deficit of the year's working, when the last of the alterations is deducted, of £63. It has been decided that the girls should pay 42s a week for themselves and 10s for a baby, instead of 30s and 10s. In cases of hardship this charge is reduced. It is possible in some instances to obtain a grant from the Local Authority to cover some or all of the cost maintenance. The cost of the alterations at St Catherine's House have been met by drawing on investments. o-o-o-O-o-o-o Because Newark firms which close for Easter this year shut down, in some cases, for a week instead of two days, about 100 women found it necessary to claim unemployment benefit from the Newark Labour Exchange. This increase in unemployment was temporary and is not reflected in the normal figures for Newark and district. The number of men unemployed in March remained constant at 31. Of these 24 were not claiming benefit. Thirty five women were out of work last month, compared to 29 at the previous check. April 16, 1952Mr Alan Menmuir, managing director of Blagg and Johnson Ltd presented 21 year old Peter George Johnson of Coddington, an employee of Brookes Motor Company and part-time student of Newark Technical College, with his National Craftsman's Certificate, the first to be awarded in Newark. Young men with technical qualifications and practical experience were invaluable to Britain today, said Mr Menmuir. The new certificate is awarded by the National Joint Industrial Council for the Motor Industry. o-o-o-O-o-o-o Vessels carrying twice as much cargo as before will be
able to pass through Newark after Friday, when British Waterways' new
lock on the Trent behind Millgate is opened. Newark's lock has imposed a limit on the size of the vessel that could reach Nottingham. The old lock will operate beside the new one, cutting out delays with trains of barges. The new lock completes a chain of locks first contemplated in the Trent Navigation Act of 1906, which authorised the building of the New Locks at Hazelford, Gunthorpe, Stoke and Holme above Newark, and Newark Nether and Cromwell and below Newark in order to improve the navigation between Newark and Gainsborough. o-o-o-O-o-o-o The newly decorated belfry of St Wilfrid's Church, North Muskham, was rededicated by the vicar, the Rev E. A. Rigden, after evensong on Easterday. The vicar also dedicated a peal board, designed by Mr J. L. Hooper, to commemorate a muffled peal rung for King George VI. Before the service 11 years-old Ronald Milnes rang the treble bell through a quarter peal Grandsire Doubles. He is the youngest Muskham boy to ring a quarter peal on the local bells. April 9, 1952The Mayor of Newark was talking about newspapers at the reception given by the Newark branch of the National Federation of Retail Newsagents Booksellers and Stationers before the annual dinner in Newark Town Hall last week. The president of the the Newark branch, Mr H. Langton,
was in the chair. o-o-o-O-o-o-o One of two 40-foot poles holding up the Ringland Circus Big Top on Newark fairground snapped during Monday afternoon's performance, while three acrobats were in the middle of their trapeze act. The act had to be abandoned, but the show went on. Few people in the audience knew of the accident. The de Vels, American trapeze troupe, who joined the circus at Newark, were unable to do the Death Dive climax of their act. "There was no danger to the public," Mr H. Ringland told the Advertiser. "The tent would not have come down." A circus employee climbed the pole in the interval between afternoon and evening performances and lashed wooden splints over the break, which was in the roof of the tent. o-o-o-O-o-o-o Due at Burnham-on-Crouch near the Thames estuary today is the twin-screw diesel yacht Nottingham Voyager, which left Newark wharf on Sunday morning. The yacht has been moored on the Trent at Newark for a year. It has lain there while her owner Mr George Beardall, motor engineer, has advertised for nine merchant adventurers willing to invest £1,000 each in the vessel. Mr Beardall intends to take Nottingham Voyager to France or Holland and then for a cruise up the Rhine followed by a trip to the Mediterranean April 2, 1952Flight Sergeant C. Rylatt of Flintham received the Air Force Medal at an investiture at Buckingham Palace held by the Duke of Gloucester. He was awarded the medal in the New Year's Honours list. o-o-o-O-o-o-o "The prosperity of Newark and this part of the county depends on the prosperity of Balderton,"said Dr George Sheppard, Conservative candidate for the Balderton Division of Nottinghamshire County Council, when he addressed a public meeting at Balderton on Monday night. Since the war, said Dr Sheppard, Balderton had grown out of all proportion and relatively no village had grown more. o-o-o-O-o-o-o After a new subsidy by the government, Newark Town Council
decided on Monday to cut by an average of 1s 8d a week the rent of council
houses allocated since February 28. An increased government subsidy to help meet the higher charges on borrowed money is the reason for the reduction. Forty tenants who have paid the higher rents since February will get a refund, said Coun Howes. o-o-o-O-o-o-o Bigger collections were taken at Newark Parish Church services last year, and more money put into the visitors' boxes. Regular and frequent communicants had made more communions. There was a steady increase in the work and support given to the Parish Church last year, said the Vicar of Newark (Canon G. W. Clarkson) in his report at the annual Parochial Church Council meeting. "Our ways do not lend themselves to great excitement in spectacular advances," he said. "But I do not make a mistake when I report a stronger sense of consolidation than any I have felt since I came to Newark." |
